Lucas Seven

In the Land of the Blind, the One-Eyed Man Is King

“All right, I know I’m that guy,” Kev said, holding up finger quotes, “but is this for real? We’re going to be babysitters now?”

They were back at the Imperial Palace Chinese restaurant, a bit over a week after they’d been here last. They had the same booth, behind a curtain, their table stacked with food. Lucas and Kev sat on one side of the table, while Casey and Lucy sat on the other.

“It’s just till Lucy gets enough levels to keep her rage under control,” Lucas muttered. “Besides, as part of this whole deal, I got them to promise us first run on any day that Sam’s villain theme park is open for the next thirty days.”

“Besides,” Lucy said, glaring at Kev from across the table, half-obscured by a tall pile of egg rolls, “I can already tell I’ll be a more valuable addition to this party than you are, you reprobate.”

“Listen here, you little—”

“Kev!” Lucas shouted. “You’re an adult, man. Act like it.”

Kev gave him a sidelong glance.

“Let’s not start fights with Lucy in public, okay? It’s bad for our health. Not to mention the health of the innocent civilians nearby who are just enjoying some dumplings. Got it?”

Kev leaned back in the booth, staring at the ceiling. He ran his hands through his hair. “Yeah, got it. Good call.”

“I’d vote we keep her just because of how much she seems to get under Kev’s skin,” Casey said, punching him lightly in the shoulder.

Lucas laughed.

“Your team seems to be lacking in technical expertise,” Lucy said, sitting straight and reading the menu as she spoke—the one in simplified Chinese. “Or really, anyone with any kind of advanced education. It seems to me that I bring a lot to the group.”

“Like calculus?” Kev asked. “When’re we going to use that?”

“Perhaps someday you will need me to override a computer lock or, perhaps, trace a computer villain,” Lucy said, still reading and not looking at him, her tone prim and proper. “In that case, algorithms, a part of calculus, would become a necessary tool.”

Kev glanced over at Lucas, his eyes narrowed into a sarcastic glare.

The curtain flew open, and the waiter walked in. “Is everything okay? Can I get you anything else?”

Lucy motioned him close. When the waiter stepped over, she spoke in rapid-fire Mandarin. The man understood and smiled wide, seemingly pleased. He jotted down notes and then turned to everyone else.

“Anything else?” he asked in English.

“I want some of whatever the genius ordered,” Kev said with a smirk. “And also some lemon chicken. And a Pepsi. And, like, a dozen fortune cookies.”

Lucas laughed as the waiter left to put in the last order.

“All right, so, the plan is—” Lucas’s phone rang, loud in the small confined space of the personal booth they were in. He glanced down–the call was from Mr. Palmer. “One sec, guys. This is important.”

Everyone else nibbled on the food they already had. Everyone except for Lucy, who refused to eat anything that anyone else had touched.
